ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: This article examines diverse perspectives on heatwave resilience in public health planning, interviewing stakeholders from various sectors. It identifies challenges, including operational, political, economic, and cultural aspects, hindering effective strategies. The study advocates for a holistic approach to heatwave resilience, emphasising interdisciplinary research and collaboration for targeted interventions. Enhancing resilience is crucial to mitigating adverse health impacts and safeguarding vulnerable populations during heatwaves. Conceptualisations of resilience related to heatwave public health planning and heatwave resilience vary significantly. There is a need to unveil the multifaceted nature of resilience in the context of heatwaves and identify key challenges that hinder effective public health planning efforts. STUDY DESIGN: Qualitative study to explore key stakeholders' conceptualisations of resilience and highlight challenges and opportunities needed for greater heatwave resilience and public health planning. METHODS: Interviews were conducted with a diverse group of key stakeholders involved in local, regional, and national heatwave planning, academics, civil sector and private sector representatives. RESULTS: The findings of this study highlight diverse conceptualisations of resilience. Conceptualisations of resilience mainly differ on the following: 'whom'; 'what'; 'how'; 'when'; and 'why'. This analysis shows that the concept of resilience is well understood but has different functions. The analysis of challenges revealed several key problems, such as operational and technical; political and governance; organisational and institutional; economic; linguistic; cultural, social, and behavioural; and communication, information, and awareness. These significantly hinder effective heatwave public health planning strategies. CONCLUSIONS: The study emphasises the need for a holistic and integrated approach to heatwave resilience. Addressing these challenges is crucial for enhancing heatwave public health planning. This study provides valuable insights into the complexities of heatwave resilience, offering guidance for different sectors of society to develop targeted interventions and strategies. The development of new resilience interdisciplinary and intersectoral research, practice, and governance will prove crucial to ongoing efforts to strengthen national heatwave resilience public health planning. By fostering resilience, societies can mitigate the adverse impacts of heatwaves and safeguard the health and well-being of vulnerable populations.

ABSTRACT

AIM: To explore nurse managers' perceptions of patient-centered care (PCC), its influence on quality nursing care, nurse job satisfaction, and to provide baseline data for a context-driven PCC model. DESIGN: The study utilized a qualitative, phenomenological design, employing individual in-depth interviews to collect data on nurse managers' PCC perceptions until data saturation. METHODS: Sampling involved purposive selection of Northern Ghana, random selection of the tertiary hospital cluster with the three participating hospitals, and purposive sampling of the nine nurse managers. Data analysis employed thematic analysis based on a six-phase framework. Methodological trustworthiness was ensured through various strategies including prolonged engagement, supervisor discussions and crosschecking with interviewees. RESULTS: Three main themes emerged from the study including nurse managers' conceptualization of PCC, perceived patient-centred practices and its influence on nursing quality and job satisfaction. The findings emphasized the patient's individuality, cultural values, holistic care, the importance of strong nurse-patient relationships and a patient-centric environment. The nurse managers perceived PCC as positively influencing quality nursing care and nurse job satisfaction. The findings offer nuanced insights into nurse managers' perspectives on patient-centeredness and highlight areas for improvement.

ABSTRACT

Hypnosis is an ancient mind-body intervention that has regained interest with the surge of research in the last decade documenting its clinical validity. Yet, theoretical controversies and misconceptions prevail among theorists, clinicians, and the general public, impeding the understanding, acceptance, replication, and use of hypnosis. Providing adequate information, which dispels misconceptions and promotes more balanced views, is warranted to facilitate the implementation and adoption of hypnosis in clinical and research settings. This review re-examines the conceptualisation of hypnosis throughout history and the theoretical controversies surrounding it while highlighting their meeting points and clinical implications. Despite dichotomies, a broad agreement appears across theoretical approaches regarding hypnotic analgesia effects, key components, and vocabulary. Further, theories highlight key factors of hypnotic responding. For instance, social theories highlight social and contextual variables, whereas state theories highlight biopsychosocial mechanisms and individual factors. Based on theories, the terms hypnotherapy or clinical hypnosis are recommended to refer to the therapeutic use of hypnosis in psychotherapeutic and medical contexts, respectively. This review concludes with a model that integrates various theories and evidence and presents hypnosis as a complex multifaceted intervention encompassing multiple procedures, phenomena, and influencing factors. This review intends to deepen our understanding of hypnosis, and promote its more rapid adoption and adequate implementation in research and clinical contexts, in addition to steering research towards evidence-based hypnotic practice. The review can have important research and clinical implications by contributing to advancing knowledge regarding hypnotic procedures, phenomena, and influencing factors.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: Patient mental state deterioration impacts patient outcomes, staff and increases costs for healthcare organisations. Mental state is broadly defined to include not only mental health but a broad range of cognitive, emotional and psychological well-being factors. Mental state deterioration is inconsistently identified and managed within acute and tertiary medical settings. This protocol aims to synthesise the evidence to test and refine initial programme theories that outline the functioning of a rapid response system. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: This synthesis will be guided by Pawson's key steps in realist reviews. We will clarify the scope of synthesis through an initial literature search, focusing on understanding the functioning of rapid response system in managing patients presenting with mental state deterioration in acute hospital settings. Initial programme theories will be refined by developing a search strategy to comprehensively search electronic databases for relevant English language peer-reviewed studies. Additionally, we will search the grey literature for sources to supplement theory testing. An abstraction form will be developed to record the characteristics of literature sources. We will use spreadsheets to code and report contextual factors, underlying mechanisms, and outcome configurations. ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION: As this study is a realist synthesis protocol, ethics approval is not required. Synthesis findings will be published in a peer-reviewed journal and presented at scientific conferences.

BACKGROUND: Despite the importance of rehabilitation nursing care in improving patient outcomes, the provision of this care in the early stages of diseases and injuries is limited. In this situation, analyzing the concept of rehabilitation nursing care can increase nurses' understanding of this concept and improve the provision of rehabilitation nursing care in the acute phase. This study aimed to analyze the concept of rehabilitation nursing care in acute phase of diseases with physical disability. METHOD: Walker and Avant's approach to concept analysis was performed in eight stages, including choosing a concept, determining the purpose of analysis, identifying all uses of the concept, defining attributes, identifying a model case, identifying borderline and contrary cases, identifying antecedents and consequences, and defining empirical referents. RESULTS: The important characteristics of rehabilitation nursing are comprehensive, education-based, specialized, client and family centered, interprofessional, and need-based. The antecedents of rehabilitation nursing care are related to nurses, the care settings and the nursing profession. The most important consequence of rehabilitation nursing care is improving the quality of life of patients. Rehabilitation nursing care also has positive outcomes for nurses and the healthcare systems. CONCLUSION: The findings indicate that rehabilitation nursing care has several attributes that require antecedents such as knowledge and specialized skills such as teamwork skills, effective communication skills, cultural sensitivity, holistic perspective, intuitive thinking, and reasoning. The most important consequence of rehabilitation nursing care is improving the quality of life of patients.

ABSTRACT

We used a novel linguistic training paradigm to investigate the experience-dependent acquisition, representation, and processing of novel emotional and neutral abstract concepts. Participants engaged in mental imagery (n = 32) or lexico-semantic rephrasing (n = 34) of linguistic material during five training sessions and successfully learned the novel abstract concepts. Feature production after training showed that specifically emotion features enriched the emotional concepts' representations. Unexpectedly, for participants engaging in vivid mental imagery during training a higher semantic richness of the acquired emotional concepts slowed down lexical decisions. Rephrasing, in turn, promoted a better learning and processing performance than imagery, probably due to stronger established lexical associations. Our results confirm the importance of emotional and linguistic experience and additional deep lexico-semantic processing for the acquisition, representation, and processing of abstract concepts. BACKGROUND: Wellness is a holistic, multidimensional, and process-oriented property on a continuum. It has been used interchangeably with and is undifferentiated from concepts such as health and well-being without an in-depth clarification of its theoretical foundations and a reflection on its meaning. The concept of wellness is frequently used, but its definition remains unclear. AIM: To conceptually and theoretically explore the concept of wellness to contribute to a deeper understanding in caring science. METHOD: Rodgers' evolutionary concept analysis was applied to the theoretical investigation of data from publications of international origins. The focus was on antecedents, attributes, consequences, surrogate and related terms, and contextual references. A literature search was performed through a manual review of reference lists and an online search in CINAHL and PubMed via EBSCO, and in ProQuest. Abstracts were examined to identify relevant studies for further review. The inclusion criteria were peer-reviewed papers in English; papers published in scientific journals using the surrogate terms 'wellness', 'health', 'health care', and 'health care and wellness'; and papers discussing and/or defining the concept of wellness. Twenty-six studies met the inclusion criteria. RESULTS: Based on the findings from this concept analysis, a definition of wellness was developed: 'a holistic and multidimensional concept represented on a continuum of being well that goes beyond health'. Implications for nursing practice were correspondingly presented. CONCLUSION: Wellness is defined as a holistic and comprehensive multidimensional concept represented on a continuum of being well, that goes beyond health. It calls attention by applying the salutogenic perspective to health promotion in caring science. It is strongly related to individual lifestyle and health behaviour and is frequently used interchangeably with health and well-being without an in-depth clarification of its theoretical foundation.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: The global incidence of cancer and available cancer-directed therapy options is increasing rapidly, presenting patients and clinicians with more complex treatment decisions than ever before. Despite the dissemination of evidence-based communication training tools and programs, clinicians cite barriers to employing effective communication in cancer care (e.g., discomfort of sharing serious news, concern about resource constraints to meet stated needs). We present two composite cases with significant communication challenges to guide clinicians through an application of evidence-based approaches to achieve quality communication. METHODS: Composite cases, communication skills blueprint, and visual conceptualization. RESULTS: High-stakes circumstances in each case are described, including end-of-life planning, advanced pediatric illness, strong emotions, and health inequities. Three overarching communication approaches are discussed: (1) content selection and delivery; (2) rapport development; and (3) empathic connection. The key takeaways following each case provide succinct summaries of challenges encountered and approaches used. A communication blueprint from the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center Communication Skills Training Program and Research Laboratory has been adapted and is comprised of strategies, skills, process tasks, and sample talking points. A visually concise tool - the Communication Blueprint Traffic Circle - illustrates these concepts and demonstrates the iterative, holistic, and agile considerations inherent to effective communication. CONCLUSION: Evidence-based communication is foundational to person-centeredness, associated with improved clinician and patient/caregiver outcomes, and can be integrated throughout routine oncology care. When used by clinicians, evidence-based communication can improve patient and caregiver experiences and assist in ensuring goal-concordant cancer care delivery.

BACKGROUND: Despite the recognised health benefits of physical activity, the physical activity levels of children and adolescents continue to decline. The concept of physical literacy (PL) is a promising holistic approach to physical activity promotion that addresses affective and cognitive domains in addition to physical and motor domains. In Germany, however, no uniform or widely used method exists for assessing PL in children. This research was conducted to compile information on international PL assessment systems for children and adolescents (up to 18 years of age), including their underlying definitions, structural designs and development processes, for the purpose of developing such a tool in Germany. METHODS: A scoping review was conducted using PubMed, Web of Science and SPORTDiscus database entries. The initial search was conducted in July 2022, with a follow-up search performed in May 2023. Articles that operationalised the construct of PL and at least two of the three domains were identified and included. The procedure and assessment tools used to evaluate the individual domains and the overall PL construct were extracted from all selected articles. RESULTS: A total of 882 articles were identified; five were added after a manual search. After duplicates were removed, 563 articles were screened by title and abstract, and 40 articles met the inclusion criteria and were included in the review. In a review of these articles, 23 different assessment procedures were identified. Eight assessment procedures included PL as a superordinate construct. Twenty-two of the 23 procedures assessed the affective and physical domains, only 14 assessed the cognitive domain. CONCLUSION: Approximately half of the identified PL assessment systems addressed all three domains. Motor performance was most frequently integrated into the test procedures. Future developments in Germany should integrate all domains in the assessment to produce a holistic conceptualisation as the basis for appropriate funding.

ABSTRACT

Memory typically is better for information presented in picture format than in word format. Dual-coding theory (Paivio, 1969) proposes that this is because pictures are spontaneously labelled, leading to the creation of two representational codes-image and verbal-whereas words often lead to only a single (verbal) code. With this perspective as motivation, the present investigation asked whether common graphic symbols (e.g.,!@#$%&) are afforded primarily verbal coding, akin to words, or whether they also invoke visual imagery, as do pictures. Across four experiments, participants were presented at study with graphic symbols or words (e.g., $ or 'dollar'). In Experiment 1, memory was assessed using free recall; in Experiment 2, memory was assessed using old-new recognition. In Experiment 3, the word set was restricted to a single category. In Experiment 4, memory for graphic symbols, pictures, and words was directly compared. All four experiments demonstrated a memory benefit for symbols relative to words. In a fifth experiment, machine learning estimations of inherent stimulus memorability were found to predict memory performance in the earlier experiments. This study is the first to present evidence that, like pictures, graphic symbols are better remembered than words, in line with dual-coding theory and with a distinctiveness account. We reason that symbols offer a visual referent for abstract concepts that are otherwise unlikely to be spontaneously imaged.

The concept of self-care for music therapists is not a new topic in the literature, yet music therapy students' perspectives have largely been excluded from formal discussions and research studies. For this reason, this study aimed to examine music therapy students' conceptualizations of self-care and identify practices that students frequently engage in for self-care. As part of a national survey, music therapy students currently enrolled in an academic degree program for music therapy within the United States defined self-care and identified up to three of their most frequent self-care practices. We analyzed the student self-care definitions and self-care practices using inductive content analysis. Two primary categories emerged from the student definitions-the Act of Self-Care and the Desired Outcomes of Self-Care-with several more detailed subcategories. Additionally, we grouped participants' most common self-care practices into 10 categories and identified two emergent areas for exploration: self-care practices done with others/done alone and engaging in self-care practices that intentionally do not involve anything related to academics/coursework/clinical work. Together, these findings indicate that students' conceptualizations of self-care and their self-care practices have similarities and differences with music therapy professionals' perspectives and practices. We discuss these findings in depth and provide recommendations for future self-care discussions that emphasize the need to prioritize students' perspectives and to expand conceptualizations of self-care to include contextual and systemic impacts and factors that influence the individual self-care experience.

OBJECTIVES: Métis people experience health inequities and often face discrimination when accessing health services. Métis-specific services are limited, and pan-Indigenous approaches to health services fail to acknowledge heterogenous identities and distinct health needs of the Métis. This study explored a Métis response to HIV and other sexually transmitted and blood borne infections to inform public health services development for Métis people. METHODS: As part of the DRUM & SASH Project, this study used a community-based research approach which privileged Métis knowledges and processes. Three gathering circles were held in Alberta, Canada, with self-identified Métis individuals who had lived experience or intimate knowledge of HIV/hepatitis C or worked in HIV/HCV service provision. The gathering circle process integrated Métis cultural practices in discussions about Métis understandings of health. Gathering circles transcripts were used to inform the description of the model emerging through the dialogue. RESULTS: Twelve diverse Métis people participated in gathering circles. Participants identified 12 determinants of health and well-being grounded in Métis culture and imagery, including Métis medicine bag, fiddle, cart tarp, flag, Capote coat, sash, York boat, moccasins, grub box, weapons, tools, and stove. The Red River Cart Model, a Métis-specific model of health to guide service planning, was created from these discussions. CONCLUSION: The Red River Cart Model provides a holistic view of the determinants of Métis health and has potential as a collaborative client assessment resource for STBBI community health service providers. Additionally, this model may be helpful to other health service providers for developing Métis-specific/informed services and improving cultural safety for the Métis.


RéSUMé: OBJECTIFS: Les Métis font face à des iniquités en santé et sont souvent l'objet de discrimination dans leur accès aux services de santé. Les services centrés sur les Métis sont limités, et les approches panautochtones face aux services de santé ne reconnaissent ni l'hétérogénéité des identités, ni les besoins de santé particuliers des Métis. Notre étude a exploré une intervention métisse face au VIH et à d'autres infections transmissibles sexuellement et par le sang (ITSS) pour éclairer l'élaboration de services de santé publique pour les Métis. MéTHODE: Dans le cadre du projet DRUM & SASH, notre étude a utilisé une méthode de recherche de proximité qui a privilégié les savoirs et les processus métis. Trois cercles de rassemblement ont eu lieu en Alberta, au Canada, avec des personnes s'identifiant comme étant métisses et ayant un vécu ou une connaissance intime du VIH ou de l'hépatite C ou ayant travaillé à offrir des services liés au VIH ou au VHC. Le processus des cercles de rassemblement a intégré des pratiques culturelles métisses dans les discussions des savoirs métis en matière de santé. Les transcriptions des cercles de rassemblement ont éclairé la description du modèle ayant émergé de ce dialogue. RéSULTATS: Douze personnes métisses d'horizons divers ont participé aux cercles de rassemblement. Elles ont défini 12 déterminants de la santé et du bien-être ancrés dans la culture et les images métisses : le sac de guérisseur, le violon, la bâche de charrette, le drapeau, le caban, la ceinture fléchée, la barge d'York, les mocassins, le coffre de nourriture, les armes, les outils et la cuisinière. Le modèle Red River Cart (« charrette de la rivière Rouge ¼), un modèle spécifiquement métis de la santé, a été créé à partir de ces discussions pour guider la planification des services. CONCLUSION: Le modèle Red River Cart présente un portrait holistique des déterminants de la santé des Métis et pourrait être une ressource collaborative d'évaluation des patientes et des patients pour les prestataires de services de santé de proximité liés aux ITSS. Ce modèle pourrait aussi être utile à d'autres prestataires de services de santé pour élaborer des services centrés sur les Métis ou éclairés par la culture métisse et pour améliorer la sécurisation culturelle pour les Métis.

Body positive social media content aims to positively impact young women's body image and mood by challenging traditionally narrow beauty ideals. This online experiment investigated the effect of viewing body positive Instagram posts on young women's body image and mood, whilst focusing on understanding the impact of the images and captions in the posts. Overall, 195 young women (18-30 years old) were randomly assigned to view either body positive (consisting of images and captions), body positive captions only, body positive images only, or thin-ideal Instagram posts. Positive mood increased in all conditions pre to post exposure. Further, body satisfaction and negative mood improved pre-post exposure for all body positive conditions. However, when controlling for trait body appreciation significant effects only remained for the combined image and caption body positive condition. There were no significant differences in positive mood, state body appreciation, self-objectification, or broad conceptualisations of beauty between the three body positive exposure conditions. Therefore, to improve body satisfaction and mood, body positive content should include a combination of images and captions.

ABSTRACT

In this article, we explore the act of resistance by nurses and midwives at the nexus of abortion care and gender-based violence. We commence with a brief overview of a multiphased extended grounded theory doctoral project that analysed the individual, situational and socio-political experiences of Australian nurses and midwives who provide abortion care to people victimised by gender-based violence. We then turn to Essex's conceptualisation of resistance in health and healthcare and draw upon these concepts to tell a unifying and cohesive story about how nurses and midwives exercise their politics. Vignettes taken from the three study phases are provided for demonstrative purposes. Finally, we discuss the potential of resistance in health and healthcare as a postmodern feminist research tool to analyse acts by nurses and midwives that could be categorised as political.

ABSTRACT

O objetivo deste estudo foi conhecer a experiência de alguns professores ao lecionar projeto de vida durante a implementação do componente curricular Projeto de Vida no estado de São Paulo. Realizou-se uma pesquisa qualitativa, de caráter exploratório. Participaram do estudo sete professoras que lecionavam o componente curricular Projeto de Vida em duas escolas públicas, de uma cidade do interior do estado de São Paulo, escolhidas por conveniência. Foram utilizados o Questionário de Dados Sociodemográficos e o Protocolo de Entrevista Semiestruturada para Projeto de Vida de Professores, elaborados para este estudo. As professoras foram entrevistadas individualmente, on-line, e as entrevistas foram gravadas em áudio e vídeo. Os dados foram analisados por meio de análise temática. Os resultados indicaram possibilidades e desafios em relação à implementação do componente curricular Projeto de Vida. Constatou- se que a maioria das docentes afirmou que escolheu esse componente curricular devido à necessidade de atingir a carga horária exigida na rede estadual. As professoras criticaram a proposta, os conteúdos e os materiais desse componente curricular. As críticas apresentadas pelas professoras estão em consonância com aquelas presentes na literatura em relação à reforma do Ensino Médio e ao Inova Educação. Esses resultados sugerem a necessidade de formação tanto nos cursos de licenciatura quanto em ações de formação continuada, para que os professores se sintam mais seguros e preparados para lecionar o componente curricular Projeto de Vida na Educação Básica. Propõe-se uma perspectiva de formação pautada na reflexão e na troca entre os pares para a construção de um projeto coletivo da escola para o componente Projeto de Vida.(AU)


This study aimed to know the experience of some teachers when teaching life purpose during the implementation of the curricular component "Life Purpose" (Projeto de Vida) in the state of São Paulo. A qualitative, exploratory research was carried out. Seven teachers who taught the curricular component "Life Purpose" (Projeto de Vida) in two public schools in a city in the inland state of São Paulo, chosen for convenience, participated in the study. The Sociodemographic Data Questionnaire and the Semi-structured Interview Protocol for Teachers' Life Purposes, developed for this study, were used. The teachers were interviewed individually, online, and the interviews were recorded in audio and video. Data were analyzed using thematic analysis. The results indicated possibilities and challenges regarding the implementation of the Life Purpose curricular component. It was found that most teachers chose this curricular component due to the need to reach the required workload in the state network. The teachers criticized the proposal, the contents and the materials of this curricular component. Teacher's critics are in line with the criticisms present in the literature regarding the reform of High School and Inova Educação. Therefore, training is essential, both in undergraduate courses and in continuing education actions, so that teachers can teach the curricular component Life Purpose in Basic Education. A training perspective based on reflection and exchange between peers is proposed for the construction of a collective school project for the Life Purpose component.(AU)


El objetivo de este estudio fue conocer la experiencia de algunos profesores al enseñar proyecto de vida durante la implementación del componente curricular Proyecto de Vida en el estado de São Paulo. Se realizó una investigación cualitativa, exploratoria. Participaron en el estudio siete profesores que impartían el componente curricular Proyecto de Vida en dos escuelas públicas en un municipio del estado de São Paulo, elegidos por conveniencia. Los instrumentos utilizados fueron el cuestionario de datos sociodemográficos y el protocolo de entrevista semiestructurada para proyectos de vida de profesores, desarrollados para este estudio. Las entrevistas a los profesores fueron en línea, de manera individual, y fueron grabadas en audio y video. Los datos se sometieron a un análisis temático. Los resultados indicaron posibilidades y desafíos en relación a la implementación del componente curricular Proyecto de Vida. La mayoría de los profesores declararon elegir este componente curricular por la necesidad de alcanzar la carga horaria requerida en la red estatal. Los profesionales criticaron la propuesta, los contenidos y los materiales de este componente curricular. Las críticas presentadas están en línea con las críticas presentes en la literatura respecto a la reforma de la educación básica e Inova Educação. Por lo tanto, la formación es fundamental, tanto en los cursos de grado como en las acciones de educación permanente, para que los profesores puedan impartir el componente curricular Proyecto de Vida en la educación básica. Se propone una formación basada en la reflexión y el intercambio entre pares para la construcción de un proyecto escolar colectivo en el componente Proyecto de Vida.(AU)

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: In recent decades, social isolation has been increasingly linked to serious health conditions. However, social integration (SI) is a complex concept that has not been systematically explored or defined in nursing. It is essential for nurses and healthcare providers to have a clearer concept of SI to better provide holistic care to support optimal health. PURPOSE: This concept analysis aimed to clarify the concept of SI in health research and to identify attributes, antecedents, and consequences of the concept of SI to enhance understanding of the concept and its implications for human health. METHODS: Walker and Avant's framework was used as the methodology for the concept analysis of SI. A literature search using PubMed, CINAHL, and Embase databases on SI was conducted with keywords: "integration," "social integration," "social relationships," "social participation," "community integration," "socialization." Studies included in the search were published from 2001 to 2021. RESULTS: SI is affected by multidimensional individual, societal, and environmental factors. Defining attributes are productive activities, social relationships, community engagement, and leisure activities. SI is effective in promoting multiple aspects of health as well as healthy aging and overall well-being. CONCLUSION: The analysis contributes to a comprehensive and fundamental understanding of SI and contributes to helping nurses better understand patients' circumstances that promote or inhibit SI. This knowledge will support the development of interventions that support optimal health and well-being, in assisting patients to remain integrated or reintegrate into society during and following an illness or injury.

BACKGROUND: Cancer patients commonly receive care, including comprehensive treatment options, from multiple specialists within and across facilities offering varying levels of care. Given this multi-layered approach to cancer care, there is a need for coordinated care enhanced through integrated information flow for optimal patient care and improved health outcomes. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to explore how patients conceptualized cancer care coordination in an integrated health care system in KwaZulu-Natal. METHODS: The study employed a grounded theory design to qualitatively explore the patients' experiences and views on cancer care coordination using in-depth interviews. Guided by the grounded theory principles, data generation and analysis were conducted iteratively, followed by systematic thematic analysis to organize data, and review and interpret comprehensive findings. This process culminated in the development of themes relating to barriers to cancer care coordination and the interface between the primary and tertiary settings. Theoretical saturation was achieved at 21 in-depth interviews with consenting respondents. RESULTS: This study revealed that care coordination was affected by multilevel challenges, including pertinent health system-level factors, such as difficulty accessing specialty care timeously, weak communication between patients and healthcare providers, and unmet needs concerning supportive care. We found that negative experiences with cancer care erode patient trust and receptiveness to cancer care, and patients advocated for better and proactive coordination amongst different care facilities, services, and providers. CONCLUSIONS: An integrated care coordination setup is essential to create and sustain a high-performance health care system. These findings make a case for developing, implementing, and evaluating interventions to enhance the quality of cancer care for patients and ultimately improve health outcomes for patients in KwaZulu-Natal. This study will provide comprehensive data to inform professionals, policymakers, and related decisionmakers to manage and improve cancer care coordination.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: Sub-Saharan Africa bears the greatest burden of HIV. Concomitant mental disorders are common, necessitating the integration of mental healthcare into routine HIV care. Consequently, it is necessary to holistically evaluate the mental health of adolescents and young adults living with HIV (AYALHIV, 10-24 years old) by measuring negative and positive psychological constructs (eg, anxiety and self-acceptance, respectively). There has been a proliferation of positive psychological outcome measures, but the evidence of their psychometric robustness is fragmented. This review, therefore, seeks to (1) identify positive psychological outcomes used in AYALHIV in sub-Saharan Africa and map the constructs onto corresponding measures and (2) critically appraise the psychometrics of the identified outcomes METHODS AND ANALYSIS: This mixed review will be done in two parts. First, a scoping review will identify positive psychological outcomes and map them onto corresponding outcome measures. Subsequently, we will systematically evaluate the psychometric properties of the outcomes identified from the scoping review. Independent and blinded reviewers will search articles in PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, Africa-Wide Information, CINAHL, PsychINFO and Google Scholar from inception through 30 September 2022. Thereafter, separate independent reviewers will screen the retrieved articles. We will apply a narrative synthesis to map the key constructs emerging from the scoping review. For the systematic review, the risk of bias across studies will be evaluated using the COnsensus-based Standards for the selection of health Measurement INstruments (COSMIN) checklist. The quality of the psychometric properties will be rated using the COSMIN checklist and qualitatively synthesised using the modified Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation checklist. ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION: No ethical approvals are needed. The mixed-review outputs will collectively inform the development, implementation and evaluation of bespoke interventions for AYALHIV. Review outcomes will be disseminated in a peer-reviewed journal, on social media and through policy briefs. PROSPERO REGISTRATION: CRD42022325172.

ABSTRACT

In a virtual reality environment combined with a continuous delayed estimation paradigm, we investigated how manipulation of location at recall (i.e., corresponding vs. non-corresponding to the location where the object was previously encoded) affected mnemonic access and mnemonic fidelity of color information in 100 participants with a within-subjects design. We predicted that the reinstatement of location during recall would improve mnemonic access and mnemonic fidelity. The results suggest that congruent location enhances color access. However, congruent location seems to play no role, or a small role not yet identified in enhancing the details of visual mental representations (weak evidence for the null hypothesis). Explorative analyses revealed that self-reported object imagery preferences modulate the effect of location manipulation on mnemonic access. Overall, the results support the conceptualization of spatial information as a basic feature to help access visual mental representations. Taken together, these findings are in line with the scaffolding hypothesis of visual mental imagery.

ABSTRACT

Despite unprecedented advancement in educational opportunities and access to information, maternal health literacy (MHL) and health numeracy (HN) skills remain low in North America. By enhancing MHL, the educated civic public-those who have the capacity, skills, and knowledge to apply prose and numerical health information-engages more proactively in public health practice. The purpose of this scoping review was to map the existing empirical evidence on MHL to work toward a better understanding of the practical implications for public health. We explored MHL and HN through the following research question: "How are maternal health literacy and health numeracy conceptualised in public health planning, implementation, and evaluation?" First, we employed a five-stage methodological framework for scoping reviews and used PRISMA-P to systematically identify eligible articles. Then, we used thematic analysis and an inductive approach guided by the research aims to identify themes related to how MHL and HN are conceptualised in empirical studies and developed an evidence table. Finally, two different reviewers coded articles using an inductive approach into six themes. We identified 1733 articles through a systematic search of five databases. After screening all the articles, 52 articles were included for thematic analysis. The final themes were: (i) sociocultural demographics; (ii) self-efficacy; (iii) communication; (iv) information seeking and operationalisation; (v) health status; and (vi) reasoning. The research evidence demonstrated limitations concerning the impact of sociocultural background on a mother's recognition of health problems and the extent of which patient-centred care is culturally and linguistically appropriate. The research evidence revealed an opportunity to address the sociocultural linguistic experience of mothers within public health practice. Our research team supports moving away from the biomedical model of evidence-based medicine and adopting evidence-based practice ensures healthcare providers develop a holistic understanding of the maternal health needs of socioculturally diverse mothers.
